It's a delicate balancing act. Being just the right amount of homer. Too little homer and you're not doing enough to offset everyone else's slight homer. Too much homer though and then this happens.

honestly I feel like hippo and maybe even Philly should be stripped of voting rights next season. and there should be some looking into how far this type of voting dates back. treat awards process like garbage, your ballot should be placed directly in the garbage.

For clarity: I think it was dumb that my GMs voted for me because I don’t think I deserved to win any awards.

I’m restating a point I made in the awards thread, but (at least according to the way this model calculates bias) every team/HO member was at least somewhat biased except Bex.

I think given the current awards process (which I think is pretty bad and I’ve written about it at length in a previous media post), it’d be really harsh to strip a team’s voting rights. There are team reps who believe, and I believe the rep system encourages this, that their job is to get as many of their teammates on the ballot as possible and to further their teammate’s chances of winning an award.

Imaginary Award A has 5 nominees, from Teams 1-5. Teams 6-12 do not have a nominee. Everything up until the final round of GM voting, in my opinion, is set up to encourage people to be as biased as possible. Either you expect Teams 1-5 to vote for their player and Teams 6-12 to vote unbiasedly and pick the best candidate - which I’m not sure is a great system but at least it kinda makes sense - or you expect that finally, after a biased process everyone suddenly stops being biased and acts completely objectively when casting the final vote.

If our expectation is the former, and we expect people to be biased, then HO shouldn’t have a vote unless HO has 12 members from the 12 teams because otherwise some teams have more biased voters than others.

If our expectation is the latter, then the system is ridiculous and contradictory.

I agree with you on the whole team rep piece of the awards committee - it actively promotes bias. ideally there'd be 5+ people who are fully plugged into what's going on league wide making those decisions, and if there aren't that many of those people then there's another conversation to be had about the awards process top to bottom, and the committee in particular.

that being said, the GM's job and the award rep's job are fundamentally different and fundamentally separate. it's not like Laser is being asked to go fight to get OCO guys on the ballot and then turn around and be an impartial judge of their performance. that's the whole reason GM's aren't on the committee. if a GM is incapable of separating the voting process from a process that doesn't even involve them then they shouldn't even be voting in the first place because that'd be ridiculous.

the award system might be flawed, but I refuse to accept the argument that GMs can't be expected to be unbiased voters as a separate act from the committee process that they're excluded from entirely.

Are no GMs allowed on the committee? The committee members aren’t made public but some GMs have implied that they’re on the committee in the past so I assumed that they were. If they’re not allowed then yeah, I’d agree.
