Jay Longshaw has been involved in some whirlwind drafts. He was there the day his father, Ben Longshaw, got drafted by the San Jose SaberCats in the NSFL’s inaugural season. Ben had gone from a totally unknown prospect to rising star thanks to his activity around the league during the combine, happily fielding questions from the media to build his name recognition and proactively seeking out meetings with GMs. Then, he was involved in Howard Miller’s draft, as at the time his father was representing the receiver who is now playing his final season in the league. The trend of players that the Longshaw family are directly involved with getting drafted higher stopped at Miller, though. Partly because you can’t go any higher than first overall in back-to-back drafts (the DSFL and then NSFL for Miller), and partly because Jay’s own draft stocks never really got off the ground. He was very candid leading up to the draft that he didn’t have much in the way of game tape to show GMs, and he hoped that being honest would score him points. In the end, it didn’t do much, and he was a relatively insignificant pick. “Oh well, time to become a steal”, Jay was heard saying later that night.
