The Ultimus matchup promised to be a ferocious showdown that could go either way; the teams were very evenly matched, with both the Liberty and SaberCats possessing 9-5-0 records in the regular season. And after the first quarter, it certainly looked like this one would come down to the wire; both teams managed just three points, quite the sluggish start. The second half though, was more promising in terms of action, as the Liberty tallied 14 points and the SaberCats 13; the SaberCats were down by 1, but they were hardly trailing at all. They knew they could shift the momentum in the third quarter, and that's exactly what they did. Thanks to a valiant defensive effort, they shut the Liberty out in the third quarter while adding 10 points to their own total. All that was left to do was hold down the fort in the fourth and final quarter, but rather than just sit back, they were able to add three points to their lead, as they scored 10 points compared to the Liberty's 7. Just like that, it was over, and the San Jose SaberCats were crowned the league champions. It turns out that one disproportionate quarter was all that was needed to tip the balance. Final score 36-24 San Jose.
4.Wow, if Neo Donaldson wasn't lights out in this year's Ultimus Week championship match, I don't know who was! He may be a recent addition to the league as a Season 12 player, but a lack of experience didn't effect him; he didn't succumb to the massive pressure. He nailed all of his five field goal attempts, and not all of them were that close; his 19 yard, 21 yard, and 23 yard field goal attempts were fairly easy. But when it mattered and was a long distance attempt, he had the same poise and delivered the three points. He nailed a 38 yard field goal to tie the game in the first quarter and get his team on the scoreboard. And in the next quarter, when his team was trailing 17-6, he made a 45 yard field goal to get his team back in the game, which allowed them to follow it up with a touchdown and pull within one before the end of the half. This was arguably the turning point of the game, as it gave San Jose an opportunity to get back in the game and rally for a massive third quarter to win the title. While it was a short field goal, Donaldson opened the scoring to give San Jose the lead in the third quarter, so he not only got them back in the game, but he put them ahead on the scoreboard. From there, there was no looking back, and the SaberCats did not fall behind again.
