Spotlight on Youth
A big story during the NSFL playoffs this year was the emergence of San Jose’s Spencer Castle. The Cornerback has only been in the league for two years but played like a seasoned veteran during the Sabercats’ playoff run.
In the ASFC Championship, Castle would tally 6 tackles, a pass defended and an interception to help seal San Jose’s ticket to the championship game. The interception came late in the 4th quarter and halted a potential game tying drive by the Otters. It was arguably the biggest defensive play of the game.
In the Ultimus Championship Game, Spencer Castle and the San Jose defense hoped to shut down the Liberty offense much like they did last week in Orange County. Castle would finish the game with an identical stat line as the ASFC Championship including another big interception. The turnover came late in the first half as the Liberty were hoping to extend their 17-9 lead. The interception was caught with only 23 yards left for a pick 6. Although he would get tackled short of the end zone, his offense would score the very next play. This turnover helped cut the Liberty lead down to only 1 point before halftime. This was undoubtedly one of the most important plays of the game.
All About The Quarterbacks
The NSFC Championship was home to a great quarterback showdown. After highly successful seasons, Baltimore’s Childish Gambino and Philadelphia’s Adriana Falconi were ready to battle in the playoffs. Gambino was the obvious star this season with a campaign that might just win him the MVP award. But Falconi was ready to battle in hopes of a bid to the championship game.
The quarterback battle started with a 10 yard touchdown pass by Gambino to Errol Maddox for the 7-0 Hawks lead. But Falconi would take over the game from there. With three passing touchdowns, Adriana Falconi led the Liberty to an 11 point comeback in the fourth quarter to win the conference championship.
Although Childish Gambino would end the game with 289 yards, 2 touchdowns and 0 interceptions, it wasn’t enough to win the game or the quarterback battle. Adriana Falconi would outshine the Baltimore quarterback by putting up a 394 yard, 3 touchdown and 0 interception stat line. Falconi would end the game with a passer rating of 141.1. She put up such a performance that Gambino’s passer rating of 120.8 seemed subpar.
The battle of these quarterbacks was a treat to watch as they fought for an Ultimus Championship appearance. It was everything you would have hoped for when two talented players face off. There was a combined 683 passing yards and 5 touchdowns between them. It was truly a spectacle to watch and will go down in history as a great showdown.
