Entering the league is always difficult. You have to get adjusted to a new place to live, new regime. Hell you even have to change how you diet.
Randy Vuxta, WR for the Tijuana Luchadores, embraced these changes after he got drafted. But after the third day of grueling practice in the heat, Randy felt the pain of the league creeping up. What happened next set a precedent for the attitude for the rest of the season.
GM of the Luchadores proposed Rookie free day. Instead of full practice Saturday, the rookies left early to go on a trip out to the local rapids.
So after practice on Saturday, the rookies boarded a bus towards the local rapids. Kyle Idlewyld in the bag cracking jokes with Barnabas Cole. The two were throwing fries at each other until one hit George Bjornsson. The entire bus goes quiet, George gets up and throws a handful of fries back, initiating the ultimate food fight.
The fun did not just stay on the bus, as the team pilled out into the river. Victor Moreno was so stoked instead of waiting to get in the raft he dove straight in. The rooks split into two groups, offense (and Bjornsson) and the defense. Most of the time in the river was spent trying to capsize the other boat, with the big defensive players winning a majority of the battles.
When the rooks were done in the river, they climbed aboard the bus ready to head back home, tired after a long day of bonding. Unfortunately, on the way back the bus began to smoke and everyone on board had to get off. The engine had just given up. Miles Royal checked out under the hood and informed the rest of the rooks there was nothing we could do with the parts we had. Roughly 15 miles from the nearest town and depleted from the days activities, the rooks decided to spend the night on the shuttle.
Each rookie described where they came from, why they play the game and who they play for. Mothers, brothers, fathers, and sisters were talked about, as well as childhood stories like the time Randy got stuck to a light pole during his Christmas vacation in New York. Inspectah Deck even led the team in a form of karaoke.
The next morning, a tow truck arrived and the rooks were able to make it back home. But nothing will take away the sense of community these rookies have for each other. It may not be working the fundamentals, but these rooks will have the best mindset of looking out for each other both on and off the field.
