Mascots have been a part of sports since the beginning. They serve as a way to connect the team to city history and people. A proper mascot can show what we should expect from the team and city. When done correctly, you get a symbol that strengthens the team's connection to the city.
Take for example the Tijuana Luchadores. Connection to city, check. Hints to a fearsome and intimidating team, check. The Luchadores are a great mascot. It conjures images of choking out opponents. Or better yet, jumping off the top to body slam an opponent. Either way, this mascot let's everyone know not to mess with this team.
Let's try the Bondi Beach Buccaneers. Dangerous and intimidating? Check. It's an undead pirate, the scariest combination in history. It's an unstoppable killing machine constantly searching for gold, rum and booty. Scurvy and cholera don't scare these pirates.
One more example. We have the Dallas Birddogs. Do they inspire fear? Only the fear that they are too cute. Intimidating? Not at all. I see those floppy ears and I just want to rub their bellies. This is the opposite of what you want from a mascot. You shouldn't want to baby talk a mascot while you rub behind the ears.
