One of the things that Sam Squanch loved at NC State was the huge buffet spread in the dining hall. Of course, athletes also got some stuff that other students didn't, like steak and smoothies and things of that nature, but it always struck Squanch that why should only big giant athletes be able to eat their hearts out? Taking some nutrition classes through the Food Science department, Squanch realized that there is always plenty of food to go around but sometimes it gets wasted because of hang ups in the distribution systems. To that end, as soon as Squanch landed in London he hooked up with The Felix Project which is a charitable service that collects food from restaurants and stores that might otherwise be wasted and turns them into meals for the millions of food insecure residents of the UK. The Felix Project distributed over 21 million meals last year. Squanch donated 100,000 Euro from his rookie contract to match and double contributions from around the country. Squanch also spends his off season helping move food around the warehouse, sorting items and helping build the donation boxes. He even spent some time delivering the meal boxes, much to the delight of some recipients who were Royals fans. (209 words)
