If I had to pick a charity to work with, I would most likely choose to run with a charity focusing on stem cell research to assist with leukemia in pre-teens. A lot of people don’t realise that something as simple as storing or donating the umbilical cord at birth can have great value should the worst case scenario arise down the line. I’d use my platform within the sport as a way to highlight this, allowing more people to make a decision that they probably aren’t aware they currently have.
How would I bring this issue to the forefront? By whatever means necessary. Logo’s could be placed on equipment, whether it’s helmets or cleats. Events can be attended, from fancy functions and after dinner speeches, all the way through to simple “fun days” where my presence could increase overall attendance. That would ultimately help increase revenue from such events. Then, of course, there is the most obvious way of helping out of all: making a sizable donation. Football players make millions of dollars a season, so making routine six figure donations would surely help out in a number of ways and allow the organisation to focus on progress and the survival of the sickly, rather than the survival of their charity.
