Andrew Witten is passionate about charity work. Being a professional athlete is a big responsibility. Kids all over the country look up to you and admire you. If you can make a kid’s week just by talking and spending time with him or her, then that is a great opportunity to reach out and serve the community. Witten makes regular visits to childrens’ hospitals, playing games, tossing a football, or just sitting and talking with kids receiving treatment or recovering from surgeries. He also has had his eyes opened to another opportunity to help children in need: blood donations. Many people in the US, especially those with cancers like leukemia, need regular blood transfusions as part of their treatment. Given that many of the kids Witten visits at the hospitals are cancer patients, Witten has begun to donate blood every eight weeks with his local blood center. He also has appeared at multiple blood drives as a special guest. When he has done this, usually the blood center can get a full schedule of blood donations as people flock to the center to meet Witten, get free New Orleans Second Line merchandise, and get autographs from Witten. Witten encourages each of you: if you are able, please consider donating blood at your local blood center. This is a vital service for the community and your donation is guaranteed to go towards saving someone’s life.
