6. Since I joined the league I’ve been overwhelmed with helpful and supportive members of the sim community. Right off the bat after joining the rookie server I was pointed to several points of contact, the rookie mentors, that I was free to direct questions to. They were instrumental in guiding me around the league forum, as it is very easy to get lost meandering around there without a guide. Shortly after that, I was given a temporary team to finish out the current season. They were helpful in showing me how to update my players TPE and attributes. Once I was finally drafted to the Luchadores, I was greeted by one of the best management teams in the entire league. The Tijuana General Manager and Assistant General Manager made me feel welcome from the start and the whole time I was a part of their team. They reminded me if I was about to miss an update and offered advice on how to knock out some of the rookie point tasks efficiently. Upon being drafted to the Chicago Butchers, I had yet another charming experience. The Chicago General Manager was inviting and helped me through some errors I was getting on the forum and also guided me through a position change. I can’t say enough nice things about the people in leadership that I have encountered throughout my time in the DSFL and ISFL.
Unfortunately, there are a few people in the league that have not had the same warm and welcoming experience that I have received to this point. Recently there was an incident in the league involving a DSFL General Manager essentially harassing other users, including new rookies and recruits. I am not privy to all the details but I was able to put together a general picture for myself based on the posts in the punishment thread which I will outline. It seems he chose another DSFL team, almost at random, to target. When encountering players from that team in either the forum, discord, twitter, or youtube, he would at best make a snide remark and at worst, attack them for being a member of the opposing team. New recruits had even taken to messaging prospective managers from the opposing team, asking them to not be drafted there for fear of retaliation from the accused GM. After a few complaints to leadership, the manager was given a stern talking to but little changed with his behavior. He doled out a few half hearted apologies but persisted with his tormenting behavior. Finally, after even more reports, he was given a formal warning in the League Office page. Many general managers and other experienced users around the league chimed in and asked for a stiffer punishment for a serial offender but none have been brought forward to this point. The most confusing part of the whole ordeal was when the accused manager appealed the seemingly harmless punishment of a formal warning. Throughout the whole thread, the manager repeatedly doubled down rather than just owning up to his prior transgressions and/or apologizing.
I am thankful that the League Office stepped up to defend the users he offended as well as the new recruits. The league can quickly lose balance if players request to not be drafted to certain teams in fear of harassment. When I stumbled across the punishment thread, I couldn’t believe that a DSFL general manager would behave in such a contrary fashion to the behavior that I have been fortunate enough to have experienced. Hopefully the accused manager will take some time to reflect during this time of probation and he will realize that the words and tone he used with users in the past not only affect himself and those users, but the league as a whole. I fear that a probationary period may not be enough of a deterrent to prevent behavior like this in the future, but time will tell. I want to reiterate how grateful I am to all the general managers and mentors I have had the pleasure of working with to this point and I hope that I continue to have positive experiences with everyone I come across in the league! 99% of the users in the league have been fantastic to interact with but it only takes a couple bad apples to spoil the fun for everyone. I am sure the league will remain vigilant against these bad apples and keep this league a safe and enjoyable place for all users.
