In San Jose the attitude is very simple: you are all professionals and adults. Running laps is a punishment for children, not adults. Discipline is handled the way most other aspects of professional life is handled: financially. The front office has written fines into virtually all of the SaberCats contracts to include provisions for monetary fines related to on-field and off-field disciplinary issues. This doesn't mean that the team is fining players for making honest mistakes. The on-field fines are as follows: $5K fine for Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalties, with an additional $10K penalty if a second Unsportsmanlike penalty results in an ejection. Off-field fines have a wider range, from $1500 for fights and scuffles on the practice field and $500 for tardiness to team meetings, to a maximum penalty of $50K for Conduct Detrimental to the League. While the league commissioner is responsible for assessing and ultimately determining punishment from the league for these kind of incidents, the team also had the ability to punish such behavior. This approach has proved less than fruitful, as San Jose remains one of the most penalized teams in the league.
