My favorite play of the week was a relatively simple play, but as a rookie in this league, it really felt like the start of something special. It was midway through the first quarter. WR Emile Charles took a pass down to the goal line to set us up on the previous play. You could feel the anxiousness as we huddled up for the next play. The anticipation of the fans occupying the bleachers was almost suffocating. Donovan stepped into the huddle and confidently called out the play. "Let's go get 6" he said followed by the call to break. As we lined up, the defensive line was spread very wide. I had a slight moment of doubt as I thought their DE might have position on me and could possibly get into the throwing lane. As we settled into our stances, I heard Donovan call out a protection shift to the right, undoubtedly seeing exactly what I saw. I knew that if I got beat, we had protection in place to back me up. Donovan dropped in behind the center. Everything felt like slow motion. A bead of sweat fell from my mask that seemed to take 10 seconds to hit the ground. Winters shouted "HUT HUT! PIZZA HUT!" and I was out of my stance in a flash. Their DE was on me before I could blink. But I knew this was a quick play and I only needed to push him off his line for us to succeed. I planted both feet quickly and punched my right hand directly into his chest. The blow pushed him back just enough to delay his rush. He fruitlessly leapt into the air but the ball had already sailed over his hands. Several yards behind him, a pair of gloved hands shot into the air and plucked the ball from the sky. The crowd erupted. The referee threw his hands up signaling a touch down. I couldn't hear anything my teammates said as we nearly tackled Charles to the ground in celebration. We trotted off the field. While it was only the first TD of the season, it felt like we were already champions.
