Functioning societies are, in part, based on empathy. When another person's feelings and experiences become legible, we can understand how the world impacts others. This understanding, a recognition that within the core of each unique experience is a universal resonance, allows us to move beyond ourselves and engage more fully with our community and shared humanity. To live more fully in this commitment, I would change places with Blaine Falco, the starting Quarterback of the New York Silverbacks.
If the ISFL were a true meritocracy, Blaine Falco would lead the New York Silverbacks to back-to-back playoff runs. Blaine has done everything the league has asked. He earns, he leads, he contributes. And yet: pain. Heartache. He toils in the TPE mines to uphold his commitment to his team, and the simulation returns only black lung. As a rookie safety, I am mostly ignored and engage in unremarkable simulated games. Blaine, however, is yoked by the weight of the spotlight. How can I better understand the role of QB in a simulation football league if I can't learn from what happens when you work to uphold the simulation mores and genuflections only to be exiled to interceptions and 3rd and long checkdowns?
