While I am currently in the DSFL so it has been less then 7 weeks of games for us, one thing the Kansas City Coyotes could definitely improve on is our inconsistent offense. While we were able to preform well against teams like Portland and surprisingly Minnesota, the London Royals were able to hold us down in a game where we only won because of great defensive plays. Then there is our unfortunate game against the Norfolk Seawolves, where despite the defense holding down the Norfolk Quarterback, the offense just couldn't take advantage of any opportunities despite Trevor Lorenzen not throwing any interceptions.
Honestly the thing that has definitely kept us in games is our defense. Despite completely failing against the Norfolk run, it has been great against the pass. Greg Strongjaw has definitely been the standout in our defense, and even had a safety against London. Overall we just need to improve our offense by focusing more on our good running game and giving Trevor some time to breathe and keep on doing what we can on defense to keep us in games.
It's pretty hard to complain with where Minnesota is currently sitting. Yeah, technically we're second in the DSFL North, but that's just due to a tiebreaker, one that should fade from relevance as the season goes on. The Grey Ducks currently rank 1st in points for and are tied for 1st in points against. Our lead running back is easily pacing the league in attempts, yards, and TDs, and our QB currently possesses the highest QB rating and Y/A in the DSFL among players with more than 1 pass attempt (what are you doing, London?). This kind of success should be expected as Minnesota boasts top 3 units on both offense and defense on paper.
The only thing I might change is the offensive balance, though tweak might be the better phrase. Our QB is capped as is our top receiver. We also have a strong WR2 who will be pushing the cap by season's end along with a sneaky good receiving TE. I'm definitely not advocating for airing it out - we still have a capped RB and strong defense, so there's no need to go air raid - but opening up the offense to something a little more balanced might make it even tougher for opposing teams to stop us. This is pretty much a rebuilding season for the Yellowknife Wraiths. They had a solid draft, but a number of those pieces are not ready to be called up. YKW should return to being a perennial winner very soon, but in the meantime there will be quite a bit of growing pains. Second year quarterback Dustin Parmelee is having a solid sophomore season, with 11 TD passes and only 3 INTs in his first 7 games. Tight End Buffalo is getting a good number of receptions but cannot find the end zone. Receiver Bernd D. Brot is off to a nice start and is on pace for more than 1,000 receiving yards. The Wraiths defense has only 13 sacks on the season, the lowest team total in the entire league. 5 of those sacks come from rookie linebacker Kahn Cussion, who is having a nice first season overall. Yellowknife is a team on the rise, but getting where they want to be will take some time and patience.
The Dallas Birddogs have had an up and down first 4 games. Going into the year, our offense was mostly full of unknowns. It seemed like we were planning a run-first offense, yet our top 2 backs were both unproven rookies. So far, our offensive attack can only be described as inconsistent. We've had great running games, we've had awful running games. We've had great passing games, we've had awful passing games. The potential is there, if both sides of our attack work during the same game, we could be unstoppable. We just have to make it there first. Our defense has also had inconsistent games; they held the red-hot Norfolk offense to only 6 points, then gave up 32 points next week against Minnesota. Same concept applies here, if we can consistenly have performances like we had versus Norfolk, we'd be going places. We will keep putting in the work between games and are confident in our abilities for the rest of the season.
