"Punter are people too." The legend says that people wondering at night though the basement of their team have been earing these words coming from a dimly lit room. The bravest one, approahching the door, might have seen a pale, ghostly, figure. They were in the presence of a punter.
Too often, their existence is forgotten. Sure, they're lauded when they step in as a Kicker to kick the ball thought the upright, but that's it. As soon as they have to punt the bal they're forgotten. Their stats are almost inexistant. Their existance meaningless.
But if I told you their existence was integral to the win of your favorite football team, would you believe me? If I told you they theserve their spotlight too, would acclaim them? I sure would. BUT, and there's a but, that is only if they are indeed primordial to their team win. In this essay I will check if there is a correlation between a punter's performance and the win of its team.
I'll use two stats to check : Punting avg as well as % of field covered (A 30 yards punt from your opponents 40 would be 75% of the field covered, which would be better than a 30 yards punt from your own 20 (37.5% of field covered))
For the league I picked the Prospect Bowl. Why ? Because I have yet to be drafted and that's where I'm playing right now. Also because I am a very self-centered individual and I hate if theses stats don't affect me directly.
Before revealing to you the result of each games, I'd like to add that half these punters are actually bot. Some of them have been advocating to change their slogan to "Punters are people.. and bots too." but alas it hasn't caught on yet.
Week 1)
Chupacabras vs Devils (Winner in Bold)
PntAvg : 49.8 vs 46.5
%Field : 0.65 vs 0.69
Monsters vs Moth Men
PntAvg : 43 vs 46
%Field : 0.74 vs 0.60
Drengr vs Serpents
PntAvg : 45.6 vs 45.7
%Field : 0.70 vs 0.66
Koa vs Lightning
PntAvg : 40.1 vs 43.1
%Field : 0.59 vs 0.64
So far there seem to be absolutely no correlation whatsoever. The only punter winning in both categories in week 1 is Witchqueen from the Lightnings. Unfortunately for him they still lost.
Week2):
Monsters vs Chupacabras
PntAvg : 41.1 vs 48.5
%Field : 0.65 vs 0.61
Moth Men vs Devils
PntAvg : 37.8 vs 43
%Field : 0.67 vs 0.59
Lightning vs Drengr
PntAvg : 38 vs 38.5
%Field : 0.59 vs 0.49
Serpents vs Koa
PntAvg : 42.6 vs 41.1
%Field : 0.56 vs 0.66
Once again we find no correlation whatsoever and the future seemx bleak, both for the punters and your truly who was really hoping to find something there. Our lowtime of the day are the Drengr, who got a punt blocked and thus get the Worse field% award so far. That's what a 0% of field covered does for you baby.
Week 3)
Devils vs Monsters
PntAvg : 36.8 vs 46.7
%Field : 0.46 vs 0.72
Moth Men vs Lightning
PntAvg : 38.3 vs 43.9
%Field : 0.54 vs 0.66
Chupacabras vs Serpents
PntAvg : 47.6 vs 42.6
%Field : 0.63 vs 0.62
Koa vs Drengr
PntAvg : 42.6 vs 43.3
%Field : 0.72 vs 0.56
One again, no relationship between punting and winning seem obvious. The lightning, once again are winner in both categories. Witchqueen is truly giving it's all and it's worth it this time as they win one!
Week4)
Drengr vs Monster
PntAvg : 36 vs 32.2
%Field : 0.62 vs 0.46
Serpents vs Moth Men
PntAvg : 43 vs 43.1
%Field : 0.55 vs 0.63
Lightning vs Chupacabras
PntAvg : 37.4 vs 45.4
%Field : 0.62 vs 0.69
Devils vs Koa
PntAvg : 43.8 vs 40.2
%Field : 0.62 vs 0.57
Up until the last game I was holding my breath. Finally? Punters were the key to winning games? As I opened the scorebox of the last game i was praying to our lord and savior Johnny Hekker. Was it finally my time to shine? But no. These darn Devils decided to ruin everything.
Here it is folks. As I am typing this we only have 4 weeks of data but I'll stop there.
Final result : The team with the best Punting Average wins 7/16 (43%)of the time while the team with the best %of field covered wins 8/16 (50%) of the time. There doesn't seem to be any correlation between punting avg nor field covered when it comes to winning games. Punters are useless and derserve to stay locked in the basement of their team facilities.
