Well hello there! Since I’ve become addicted to the International Simulation Football League, I thought it would be a fun (haha, good one) idea to join the Fantasy Simulation League! And since I’m now thoroughly addicted to teeps and money, I thought it’d be fun (haha, good one again!) to look at the Average Draft Position (ADP) of the fantasy football drafts.
For context, there are 6 teams per fantasy league. It is a typical snake draft, so in round one, teams make their first pick in order. Then the team that picked last in round one gets to go first in round two. Rinse and repeat for 12 rounds to complete their roster. That means there are 72 picks per fantasy league. And there are 26 fantasy leagues.
I compiled all of the drafts from each league (shoutout to @TubaDeus) and determined the average draft position for each person drafted (shoutout to @ckroyal92 for the Sheets help). I then decided on a minimum of needing to be drafted in at least 3 leagues to be eligible for this list. That helped remove some of the outliers. If you were draft eligible but not on the following list, just let me know if you want to know if you were drafted and I can tell you when, as well. The table was hard to transfer here, so it can be jacked up when looking. The first number is ADP, then the number of leagues that drafted that player, then their highest pick, and lastly their lowest pick (not including undrafted). Without further ado:
There were a couple of fun little surprises, such as a couple QB’s selected early (Owen Farrell and Queen Elizabeth at #1, along with Absolute Unit at #2). Owen Farrell had the largest discrepancy between being taken #1 at the highest pick and #70 at his lowest pick, but that is also due to sample size. QB Carter Knight, getting drafted in all 26 leagues, had an incredible range of draft slots, going anywhere from #2 overall to #69 (nice).
Running back was definitely heavily favored in rounds 1 and 2, as there were 9 players with round 1 or 2 ADP’s and 8 of those were running backs. And it does not shock anyone that Pete Zuh finished with the highest overall ADP as he was the consensus #1 player (and most of us have no idea what we’re doing, so thanks rankers!).
Rounds 3 and 4 saw wide receivers start their run, along with some of the top quarterbacks and tight ends. A total of 5 WR’s had an ADP of rounds 3 and 4, yet people kept hammering the RB’s as another 5 were taken on average. A couple QB’s and TE’s sneak in there as well, although Absolute Unit gets propped up by his #2 overall selection (shoutout to League 21!).
Non-typical fantasy positions seemed to be all over the place. LB’s Jack Mcpherson and Tater Greywolf were both taken #1 in a couple leagues but also went undrafted in over 18 leagues. The highest picks on the defensive side of the ball that didn’t seem to be outliers were Raphael McTurtle at #12 and Kalam Mekhar at #13. It seems like waiting on those defensive players may be a better strategy but if you can hit the top player the position, the advantage may be fantastic.
The person with the lowest ADP that was drafted in all 26 leagues was K Alfonso Dos Santos. Shouldn’t be surprising to many fantasy veterans that kickers are reserved for later in the draft, but this format may not follow typical fantasy strategy. Swantavious King was drafted around pick 44, which is in the 8th round. Double Doink followed not far behind with an ADP of 48.
Well, feel free to parse through the data and let me know your thoughts on any interesting trends that you may find! I’ll be curious to see how ADP matches up with the pre-season rankings along with the finishes of each player.
Good luck the rest of the season everyone!
