So, first of all, certainly not the idea of an unlimited salary cap. We already have an issue with parity and certain teams continuing to dominate the league, and creating incentives to assemble super teams that will bulldoze the rest of the league is not advisable. One potential idea to spice up the league, or to enhance parity, is to apply a mandatory 5% regression for all players above 1,000 TPE on the championship winning team. Just a little something to show how difficult it is to win a championship and how much of a toll it takes, while also opening up the doors for other teams to catch up and have their chance. Sure it would mean that there would be less repeat winners, but I think that is a good thing and would help keep the league fresh. And considering how hefty regression typically is in the ISFL, 5% is basically nothing. Just a little hit to the overall TPE numbers to help encourage other winners and new champions.
Coming from the PBE, I think play-by-play adds much to the game. That said i think its a bit different because as people say this is DOT FOOTBALL, while the OOTP engine that PBE uses is much more visually appealing. You can see things happening on the sim instead of a jpeg moving across a screen. It's a tricky thing because I think in PBE, the focus is on making these streams excellent while I think it's a bit different in the ISFL with a lot more focus on discord activity and ancillary media like great articles and podcasts being more common. I think at the very least finding a way to put together an appealing Ultimini and Ultimus championship game should be something to look at and maybe figuring out a way to do that to begin with and then branching out later once you get a firm handle on this would be a solid idea. In real football the hype leading up to the final game is always the biggest part of the season, and while I think our draft coverage (which in football is the second most exciting time) is excellent I feel like the final game could stand to match that heights as well.

There's a lot of things I think could be improved about PBE. This is going somewhere. Hold on. But while I think that the PBE should adapt a lot of aspects from the ISFL... I also think there's one big thing we should copy from the PBE. They run their sims on Twitch streams, and it is great for engagement. These things in the playoffs can have 150+ people on them all watching betting channel points on who's going to win. I think this also has the added side-effect of helping maintain transparency. My main league outside of this group recently had someone rig progressions (they were random and tied to fake players) in their favor. They were a pillar stone in the community, and I think it's a big reason why I now have a natural suspicion. I'm not saying people are cheating, I'm just saying that if someone live-streamed with people watching. Then there'd be accountability.
I say this as someone who made my character...pretty much what the meta archetype was (receiving RB), but I'd love if the sim had ways to make different styles of player be viable. Jefferson was a scrambling QB, which has been the biggest new movement in the NFL, but those kinds of players aren't viable as the only meta that seems to work in the ISFL is a pocket passer. Overall, the league is just as min-maxed as it was in the DDSPF16 days and there isn't really any room for less conventional builds in this sim because they just don't perform as well, but if variety was viable I think people would be happy to do other builds like the undersized return-specialist deep threat, the dual-threat safety/linebacker/pass rusher that can line up anywhere in the backfield, and novel things like that. I just don't really like how restrictive and careful you have to be with your builds in this game to even be a competitive player, and would love to see that change.

I'm a little lazy so I'm just gonna rip off the prompt a little bit as far as suggestions. Live commentary during games is something we tried in the past and it was sort of hit or miss so not a recommendation for me. Announcers in real life have at least a week to prep for calling their game, here you just have to know everything that's going on for all the players all the time (although there did used to be this one guy like that), not to mention how fast the sim moves makes it hard to keep up commentary too. But I digress, what I actually want to talk about as far as a real suggestion is free agency. The prompt here makes a joke about unlimited cap but I do think the cap is an important topic of discussion. Obviously we can't enforce cap space as strictly as the NFL because at the end of the day this is for fun and not for business, but I feel like there could be more of an incentive given to free agents to try and promote more movement. I'll be the first to say there's extremely little incentive to move away from a team in free agency in the ISFL unless you are just not a good fit in the locker room. But chasing a ring is very hard to predict. And in a money league like this, at a certain point the value of your salary actually means very little. In a league like SSL or the SBA or the like where your contract is the only way you get money and therefore a better contract can actually give you an advantage it makes sense to try and get paid which likely comes from free agency whereas in the ISFL having a lower contract is probably actually more desirable because of the benefit it gives your team relative to what that money could do for your player. Now it wouldn't make much sense for me to say all this without offering a suggestion but the truth is that I don't know if I have a good one. The way the league is setup is not conducive to drawing players to free agency. One option would be to offer players leaving in free agency some sort of TPE signing bonus but that's of course not fair to the players that want to stay loyal to their teams which is actually what happens with most superstars in the NFL. There could also be some sort of restricted free agency method but again forcing players to leave rather than choosing to go of their own volition isn't all that fun. Well I don't think I actually solved much here but I guess I'll throw in one other suggestion is to switch to front office football for the simming and make more archetypes for the positions that actually feel unique.

Changes/additions I would like to see seem to be fairly plausible and doable.
Firstly, I don't know if they are stored anywhere (if it is posted somewhere buried behind a bunch of tabs/sections, I can't seem to find it), but a play-by-play and box score of the past week's games should be posted on the home page/easily accessable. The only place I can seem to find this information is at the end of that game's simulation on the stream video. An upgrade similar to this suggestion is to have a live play-by-play with announcer(s) with a slowed-down simulation to allow time for the announcer(s) to speak. I could see this starting out/testing with an Ultimus/Ultimini stream, moving on to implementing it to playoff games, and if it capable of taking off, make a "game of the week" where the last sim game is done with live announcers. The second thing I would suggest is to have an injury factor or update to the Endurance trait which would tie into the Regression system. The current Regression system seems to treat some positions unfairly whether it be positions that take a while to build up due to having many applicable traits to use TPE on, or the limited availability of certain positions (QBs, K/Ps, Return Specialists, TEs to some extent...). The injury factor could tie in with the Endurance trait to reflect how durable the player is. If the player is constantly used, the player would tire more. If the player is being hit/tackled or tackling on a consistent basis, they would tire easier and increase possible injury. The injury factor could have a randomized length of injury should one occur (and given this is supposed to be a fun interactive league, the "injury" should be more than a couple of games). This could also put more emphasis on building protection around the QB, and if the QB is a scrambler/dual-threat, Intelligence could be a factor to have them slide to avoid being hit and therefore avoid possible injury. This could also introduce having a back up QB roster spot and allow more players to possibly choose QB in creation, and it could possibly introduce some digital "QB controversy" debates like the ones we have IRL. This would tie into the Regression system if the player is constantly banged up and therefore regress more/faster. I feel this also more so emulates IRL football careers, in that in certain positions, the player's careers are fairly short due to injury. I know this seems like a mean/negative addition to the league, but it could eventually lead to a sense of realism for these simulations.
The biggest thing currently missing from the ISFL is good old fashioned rivalries. I have heard whispers of old rivalries like NOLA and OCO. There are remnants of them floating around in discord servers as emotes, but there doesn't seem to be much action on it. I'm not advocating for bullying or being mean to each other, but one of the big reasons I got really into college football was the pageantry of it, especially on the college level. Getting caught up in the culture of your team and having rivalry week.
Similar to how we currently have the color rush weeks I think a fun addition would be a rivalry week, a set week each season where teams all play their "rival" and it alternates home games each season. This way if teams want to make a custom field or something they would have the opportunity. Could add a spark to the games and to the community providing some additional depth to the experience. Determining who the rival is could be based on historic rivals or could be a new draw. :oco16: @UptownCord @MobiausGrander @"baz1757" |
