Otis Allen’s career in the DSFL and the ISFL, and to a greater extent his career as a football player, has been tumultuous to say the least. Change has been a constant in his learning about football, learning to play the game, and becoming a rising star in the league today. I would say that Allen’s true “welcome to the league moment” was his having to be a defensive end as a rookie for the Sabercats. Otis played strictly at defensive tackle throughout his college career and was quite a standout in this role. Given his natural aptitude to the position he didn’t spend much time trying to figure out the intricacies of other roles. Much to his surprise, when he was drafted to the Sabercats at 2nd overall in the season 21 draft he was soon after asked to fill in at defensive end, as the Sabercats already had two veteran defensive tackles in Freezer Riposte and Brayden Ennis. Allen gladly accepted the role, but was internally quite hesitant about the change in position. He understood the pressure that came with the draft number he was called at. Unfortunately, Allen’s transition to defensive end was not an easy one. He had a tough time learning the ins and outs of being a defensive end, and his stat line for season 21 would reflect that. Luckily for Allen the experience of changing positions would help to improve his game overall and allowed him to be more dynamic in both 4-3 and 3-4 sets, which his coaches were very thrilled about..
I don't get interceptions. Like at all. I'm a semi-max earner - I've missed a bit of TPE here and there because I've been a bit busy but I'm still only about 25 to 30 or so behind the top of the class. I figured that I'd be producing similarly to other DBs in my class. Similar earning, similar build at this point. You'd assume similar stats. You'd assume wrong. The meme when I got drafted by the Austin Copperheads was that I'd take Dermot Lavelle Jr. out back and put his old corner that hadn't ever really produced like the highest earner of all time down. Instead I've become the new Dermot while he's had a career renaissance. This season he has a league leading 6 interceptions along with 19 PDs - good for fourth in the league. How about Colt Mendoza? A solid 1 interception and 9 PDs. How about last season? Dermot was tied for second in the league with 5 interceptions and had 15 PDs to go along with it. How about Mendoza? 1 pick and 12 PDs. These are literally career numbers for Dermot - the season before Mendoza started playing for Austin he was a middle of the pack CB with 3 interceptions and 14 PDs. With Mendoza he's the best CB in the league while Mendoza is almost the worst. Whats the welcome to the league moment here? That we're stuck with team legend Dermot and I can't take him out back and put him down yet.
Marcella Toriki's career has been a good one, and that fundamentally began with a strong start. She played college ball at the University of Oregon. Her crew there helped push her to be the best that she could be, and capitalized on an existing strong work ethic. That strong start gave her the confidence she needed to push to join the ISFL. Her start in the DSFL was good enough, grinding out a high yardage over her season with the Norfolk Seawolves. But the transition from the DSFL to the ISFL proper proved challenging. Her initial season had a slow start, and she felt that her talents just weren't converting to the next level. It was mid-season when she got a visit from her crew of friends from her Oregon days on a game weekend that things turned around. Her friends reminded her of that drive to be the best, and she felt renewed. She was able to take that weekend of reminiscing and turn it into a stronger second half. That season she went on to win rookie of the year, so you can definitely say that it worked. she's had a strong career since then, which moments of struggle but overall a consistent contributor to her teams.
