As any current, former, and future DSFL general manager will tell you about their job, the main goal is to develop players first and the wins will follow. It is a major part of the DSFL that I loved getting to take part in and experience with all of the new players that have come through my old Kansas City managing days and something I still enjoy every draft night. Seeing just what players develop over their first season and beyond can be exciting for any older player to watch even if they don’t end up playing for your team. However, during all of this watching and the constant reminders DSFL managers will get, some might stop and wonder just how much developing does the development league do? There are plenty of recreates that come through the system again and again that understand the game with just as many new faces braving the league in order to become the next set of veterans. Yet there has to be a moment that we pause when we look at all of the DSFL teams to wonder which team really is developing players at the best rate that can, in turn, help those new faces or struggling vets find a way to shoot into stardom with proper management and the right help needed for the job.
Of course, that might just be might thoughts alone, but it got me curious enough to start digging into the question, what DSFL team develops the most (and best) top talent? For that answer we had to dig around through the old draft classes and find out what the best way to determine ‘top talent’ in the league was. It’s not quite that difficult considering we have a numeric system in place to determine just how much a player is supposedly ‘worth’ with their TPE. The higher TPE players are usually seen in the first two to three rounds (depending on the class). So, we can cut down our group of top talent players to the first few rounds in order to really see what teams are doing the best. Another thing to add with our development metric is to get rid of the initial fifty TPE that players receive since that is a given whenever you build your player regardless of your team. There can be an argument to remove more, but not every player earns all of the rookie task TPE so keeping off the initial fifty TPE seems fair for everyone involved. Those two things can help get us down to the strict numbers of what teams are developing the best players in the DSFL. The last thing is determining where to begin our measurement to keep it relevant so we don’t have the teams that have been around forever with an obvious lead over everyone. The most relevant season to me seems like S18 since it was earlier big r/Madden classes along with having plenty of the big league names still around today. There are some teams that did not play each season from here, but we can break those down later. For now, we have our set of data.

Of all seasons, I believe this one deserves a little text explanation as to why it looks so weird compared to other seasons. Back in the day, there was a noticeable drop in player activity that was felt the most by the Norfolk Seawolves and Kansas City Coyotes. It seems so odd today that there could even be a drop in player activity but it happened and as a result, the teams with the least amount of activity had to face the brunt of the cut backs and became bot teams for the DSFL. They did not have any players drafted in the S20 draft but with an incoming r/Madden class coming soon, the activity as a league would resurrect the Coyotes and Seawolves back onto the front of the league.

So, we come back to the question about how well certain DSFL teams develop players for the next level. There are plenty of numbers around to fully understand the true “best developers” in the DSFL along with some interesting bits of fun trivia coming out of the DSFL. The best DSFL class along with the highest number of players drafted comes from the S22 Dallas Birddogs along with producing the most top talent at a bonus 1825 TPE on players moving on. The worst draft class comes from the S19 Norfolk Seawolves with only one player drafted in their first two rounds and the player only managed to get 56 TPE developed. Another fun fact is that, despite only being around for a couple seasons, London and Dallas are not that far behind the other teams in terms of total TPE developed. They still have a bit of a fall from the Norfolk Seawolves (who sit at 5th place) but there is definitely a quick rise coming from promising managers of the future.
However, to answer the question of the best DSFL teams with developing players...
Developed TPE Totals:
- Myrtle Beach Buccaneers – 4570 TPE
The Myrtle Beach Buccaneers definitely take the lead at total of 4570 TPE with their top players. It makes sense though with their extremely well-known managers and plenty of great players that have gone through the Solar Bears and Buccaneers.
- Minnesota Grey Ducks – 4309 TPE
In 2nd place is the Minnesota Grey Ducks that come in close with a strong former showing that has since cooled off. They had the record for the most TPE in a class until Dallas arrived.
- Tijuana Luchadores – 4120 TPE
Next up is the Tijuana Luchadores who have always had a great showing with even their smallest classes. Something about Tijuana is that they always manage to get plenty of great players that are in high roles around the league eventually.
- Kansas City Coyotes – 4025 TPE
Then in 4th place, Kansas City Coyotes that have started to get back on track to rise up with scouting and developing after their S20 absent draft. They have been getting much better according to their past of missing out of top talent with plenty of first round talent going into the draft.
- Portland Pythons – 3604 TPE
Next up is the Portland Pythons that have been producing fairly average numbers and there aren’t a ton of surprises coming out of Portland when they develop players. They haven’t had a single draft with more than four players in the first two or three rounds so that also provides to the very average Python development.
- Norfolk Seawolves – 3493 TPE
After them we have the Norfolk Seawolves that did not see that much of a rise after their S20 absence. They did not have a lot of crazy drafts worth mentioning outside of their S19 draft with only one player drafted but they’re getting much better so a major rise could be in the future.
- Dallas Birddogs – 3260 TPE
Our next team is the Dallas Birddogs that shot up quickly with their first draft and hold the record for the most TPE developed in a draft along with the most people. Even if you have some rivalry against them, that’s impressive from any standpoint and as they start to move on to new managers it will be exciting to see what comes next.
- London Royals – 2514 TPE
In last place are the London Royals. Thankfully there is a bit of an explanation due to them being a still fresh expansion team without a huge draft class to push them up into the higher ranks. The Royals have a lot of potential as well so hopefully they catch up with Dallas and we see more teams developing extreme talent.
Of course, that might just be might thoughts alone, but it got me curious enough to start digging into the question, what DSFL team develops the most (and best) top talent? For that answer we had to dig around through the old draft classes and find out what the best way to determine ‘top talent’ in the league was.
