As a part of the New Orleans Second Line I think we have one of the most unique names or mascots in the entire league, all of professional sports in general really. For those that do not know, the Second Line in Creole tradition is a celebratory musical parade of sorts that is used across New Orleans for a a number of different reasons – a tradition long upheld in that region’s culture. The “First Line” is typically the parade leader or whoever is being honored, the celebrating and borderline raucous musicians and dancers that follow the First Line are referred to as the Second Line. The Second Line is most frequently used in Weddings to lead guests from the wedding venue to the reception hall, but it is also used quite frequently for other celebrations (and even funerals!).
Honestly it is one of the coolest mascots to have – though I’m not sure what our actual mascot is, considering the Second Line is more of a tradition than a person, object, or animal like most. It is really neat to have such a strong tie to tradition and culture – makes it seem a lot more thought out than some of the other teams that are out there (i.e. Austin or Baltimore… I really feel bad for those guys). Proud to be in NOLA!
