I’ve always imagined the Philadelphia Liberty mascot to be one of two things. The first is the serious mascot, who is basically a Paul Revere type character, a man dressed in early American colonial garb who carries around a musket and hits a giant bell every time the Liberty score. He represents the heart of American freedom that is also targeted in the naming of the team, so he’s special because he’s the most American mascot you could get in America’s favorite sport. He’s known for lining up on the sideline with the special teams unit and charging down the sideline as they return kickoffs and punts, his musket forward like he’s charging the enemy. The second mascot I picture is known to many, the mascot that’s just a giant Liberty Bell (named Libertine), though the iconic crack is on the front, like a cleft chin, instead of on the back, like a butt crack (this is a sport for all ages after all). He also rings the giant bell whenever Philly scores, but he always apologizes to the bell afterward, caressing it in a caring way since he knows what it’s like to be rung. There’s no charging down the field for him either, as running is difficult in the costume.
