First off, I don’t know why my high school would be contacting me, an alum who never tried out for the football team and has social anxiety for the coaching position for a game. But anyways, I would motivate the team by getting to know them more. Kind of interviewing each player to build a bigger relationship with them. Players are more likely to perform better if they trust their coach, so that’s the first point of attack. Next, when practice rolls around, kind of scout the team. See what our strengths and weaknesses are as a team, and gameplan around that. If film is available for our opponents, go ahead and watch that too to see where we should attack. Then, as the game approaches, I would only talk when needed. Once gameday finally rolled around, I would surprise everyone by giving a great pre-game speech (rehearsed beforehand of course I’m dumb and can’t think of something on the fly), leaving the locker room hyped and ready for a game. As for on field decisions, I would keep the playbook simplified to make sure the players actually know what they’re doing. Once the game actually happens, who knows after that. We could get mauled, or pull off a surprise victory, but at least I would have given it a good effort.
