Sitting down with a young athlete is never an easy thing. The stig remembers times when people would sit down with him and tell him that his focus needed to be elsewhere, or that he would never make it. When your young, your hard headed, and sitting down to speak to someone can be challenging. But one of the biggest pieces to this conversation would be to use the positives this individual already has going for them. If they are that determined for something, the best thing is to spin their determination into something useful. Being a professional athlete isn’t just about being athletically gifted or being in the gym more than the next person. Sure, it helps but continuing your education gets you into schools you may not have had a chance at. Maybe this family member doesn’t get a full ride to a D-1 school, but he gets an academic scholarship and walks on and proves himself. Being an athlete again isn’t just physical, its mental, academics can’t set you up for so many challenges in the future. This is the type of conversation I would have.
