Junior year at Fresno State University. Prior to the start of the season, coach had a talk with me. He told me they needed me to step up to the big time and start at Left Tackle. This was a huge promotion of sorts as everyone knows with a Right-Handed QB, Left tackle is the most important position to protect the QB's blind side. I excitedly accepted the role and promised coach he would not be disappointed.
There were a lot of nerves leading up to my first game. We had all worked so hard in practice and knew we had something special, it was just a matter of putting it into practice.
On the very first pass call, their DLine ran a stunt that I didn't pick up and gave up a sack. I wanted to throw up. But our QB Cann smacked me on the helmet and told me to shake it off. That's exactly what I did. Shook it off. I was so determined to make it up to him. I gave up zero pressures the rest of the game. Our line played lights out. The adjustment call outs were right every time. It was like a chess match where we knew every move they were about to make. It was just a preview for our season.
As a line that year, we gave up the fewest sacks and QB pressures in the conference. Our straight-forward rushing attack was unstoppable. Dlines almost never touched our runnings backs, with usually linebackers or even DBs making first contact.
It was the most special unit I've ever been a part of. We dominated that season on our way to a conference championship. I still have the last jersey signed by all my teammates on my wall and I'll never take it down.
