Coming off of a disappointing performance in season 21 the San Jose Sabercats were looking to fill multiple holes in the draft. The strongest part of their team would have to be their defense as they were top 3 in the league in total yards, points and passing yards.
The San Jose general managers continued the trend of favoring defense picking 16 defensive players including 10 defensive backs. This emphasis on pass defense will help but I would have liked to see some more help on the offensive side of the ball drafted where the Sabercats ranked 10th in points scored in season 21 with 17 a game.
Overall their draft graded out to above average to me. They could have taken some more offensive talent higher in the draft but their ability to find hidden gems in the middle rounds was impressive. I can see this draft class having a big part of turning this San Jose team around. Every draft class is important when you’re a general manager but this must be an extra special draft for Rradum as his player and future Sabercat QB Monterey Jack was drafted in the second round.
Round 1 (5th Overall) @revuhlution - Chester Sweets - CB - 238 TPE
Season 21 DSFL Stats: 54 tackles, 2 interceptions, 16 pass deflections
With the 5th pick overall the Sabercats look to improve their already impressive defense. Sweets has some of the highest TPE of any cornerback in the draft and will have a chance to make an impact early for San Jose.
Round 2 (24th Overall) @Rradum - Monterey ‘Monty’ Jack - QB - 229 TPE
Season 21 DSFL Stats: 1553 yards, 12 touchdowns, 9 interceptions, 65 QB rating.
The Sabercats drafted their general manager in the second round and his player Monty is one of the top young arms in the league. He tends to be a gunslinger on the field with a subpar completion percentage but good amount of touchdowns. He will most likely need another year of development before taking over.
Round 3 (29th Overall) @RussDrivesTheBus - Lawrence Bass - LB - 199 TPE
Season 21 DSFL Stats: 147 tackles, 6 tackles for a loss, 6 sacks, 1 pass deflection, 1 forced fumble.
Bass had a great year for the Grey Ducks last season and is looking to be a young star on this San Jose defense. He has been a steady high earner in his young career and has a bright future in this league.
Round 4 (41th Overall) @`tractorcito_grande` - Cadillac Harris - CB -198 TPE
Season 21 DSFL Stats: 59 tackles, 1 sack, 1 interception, 14 pass deflections
Harris was a stud on defense last year for London in the DSFL and the Sabercats got a steal of a pick here. Harris has been an extremely active user on the site and looks to be a top earner for his position. Pairing him up with sweets will be a great combo for years to come.
Round 5 (53 Overall) @Matty7478 - Matthew McDairmid - KP - 205 TPE
Season 21 DSFL Stats: 42.8 average punt length, 8 punts inside 20, 1/1 field goals
This is a pick that is a little strange to me but might be because I am new to the league. This guy is no doubt a top earner with over 200 TPE but I feel like San Jose could have got more value out of this pick. I hope to see McDairmid turn into a HOF kicker for the Sabercats.
Round 6 (65 Overall) @AL_GRINGO - George ‘Corpsegrinder’ Fisher - LB - 187 TPE
Season 21 DSFL Stats: 116 tackles, 1 sack, 1 interception, 2 pass deflections
This was another great pick by the San Jose general managers. Fisher was one of the top linebackers of the class going into the draft and for the Sabercats to get him this late was an excellent pick up. Just like Harris and Sweets will be in the backfield for years to come Bass and Fisher could be terrorizing offenses at the linebacker spot.
Round 7 (74 Overall) @BenDover - Jamar Lackson - RB - 192 TPE
Season 21 DSFL Stats: 931 rushing yards, 4.8 yards per carry, 5 rushing touchdowns
Lackson was the first of the three players taken by the Sabercats in the 7th round. He had a productive season last year in the DSFL where he averaged almost 5 yards a carry. Jamar will be a big help to the San Jose running game but will need another year to develop.
Round 7 (77 Overall) @jdourtled - Brendan Lanier - S - 173 TPE
Season 21 DSFL Stats: 29 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 interceptions, 3 pass deflections
Another defensive player taken with this pick by San Jose and Lanier looks to be a versatile player from the safety position. Although not the highest of earners in the league with the right development Brendan could be a key part of the Sabercat secondary.
Round 7 (84 Overall) @`Reaper11B` - Matt Krause - CB - 114 TPE
Season 21 DSFL Stats: 36 tackles, 7 pass deflections
This pick was one where I would have gone another way than another defensive back. The Sabercats have many holes on offense and I would have liked to see some of those filled with this pick. Krause overall looks like an average corner and will need more development.
Round 8 (89 Overall) @DigitalMole - Jamie Watson - WR - 109 TPE
Season 21 DSFL Stats: 6 catches, 94 yards
The Sabercats took Watson here with their 8th round pick and he looks to be a long shot prospect for them. At only 109 TPE he has a lot more to prove if he wants to be a steady player at the NSFL level.
Round 9 (101 Overall) @nick900 - Nick Marksman - TE - 99 TPE
Season 21 DSFL Stats: NONE
Another offensive player taken here in the 9th as the Sabercats looks to add some more depth to their prospects. Marksman got little playing time in the DSFL and will have to show more TPE earning potential if they want to see the field. Another long shot but this late in the draft not many active users are usually left.
Round 10 (113 Overall) @Jacob.bilyeu18 - Buster Brownce - DE - 104 TPE
Season 21 DSFL Stats: 7 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 tackles for a loss, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery,
I really like this pick for San Jose in the 10th round. This user doesn’t have the most TPE but their player has been very productive so far in their career. This player can take some time to develop and if they stay active could find their way on the Sabercat roster.
All the other picks past this point do not seem to have a chance to make an impact due to their activity level. I hope that I am proven wrong but the later round picks more often than not do not continue on to have productive careers.
