My work has Work From Office on Tuesdays-Thursday, mostly it’s an excuse to waste peoples’ time and make them sit in meetings where half the people are online and so it’s not a real in-person meeting, but on Thursdays they do Happy Hour at 3 PM. There are snacks and drinks available, I got a vodka soda today. I’ve spent all day on ISFL stuff and what about a bit more?
(PS. this reads differently now that I'm finishing it up on not that Thursday)
I read somewhere that you can’t judge an NFL draft until after three seasons, it takes that long to see what you have. With this in mind, looks like we’ve just passed that 3 season mark, let's look at the S43 draft class!
Initially this was a review of people’s mocks (featuring LHarm, Cycro, UberBJ, Radio, NickyVMLP, ZodiacEXE, and DoubleDub) that turned into a review of people’s draft reviews (only nickyvmlp and I did those) but it felt unfair to do that? The draft had loads of trades, nicky was looking at more of an NFL style look, and so, I’m just gonna review the players at each spot in the first 2 rounds, and then grade the teams on how well they did!
As a sidenote, this is what nicky gave me:
It’s true, I stayed in the DSFL for a couple more seasons, had a couple medium seasons as WR2 in Arizona and now am an LB.
As a note, I’m going to give grades from 1-5, I want to force myself to commit to a grade, none of this half step nonsense either.
1.01 LB Thomas Sutha - 1047 TPE - 5
Hey, it’s me! I would give myself an A. With the 1OA you basically expect a franchise cornerstone and I’m a GM now, even forcing Kotasa to retire with how bothersome I am. TPE wise I’m around the top, all us top earners are around the 1025-1075 mark with Opera_Phantom alone at 1137.
GM, still max earning, MDM, and an Ultimus win makes me happy with an A grade. I’m a B level GM but that’s w.e. (copium)
Trade:
Austin - Receives Pick 2
Berlin - Receives Pick 5 + Pick 8
Austin - 4
This is a win-win trade for both squads, Austin needs a QB and they get one of the most steady users in the league. This is why you save draft capital!
Berlin - 4
If you know you don’t need to get a QB this draft, just get the extra pick and pick some studs. Great value acquisition.
1.02 QB Jay Cue III - 1137 TPE - 5
OP was kind of a shoo in to be an A pick. I would give this an A+ but Austin had to trade 5 + 8 for the 2nd overall selection. OP has won another Ultimus in S45 with Austin and I don’t think they’d mind giving up another pair of firsts if it meant another one.
1.03 DE Gil Fischer - 922 TPE - 4
I love me ctots, he was one of the first good friends I made on the server and my hopes in the draft going into it was to be on a team with him and Radio, well those two went to Sarasota and I’m in another conference. Ctots is a high earner, a touch behind at 14th overall in the list. As a DE he’s a solid contributor but not sure how involved he is anmore!
1.04 DT Sack Sparrow - 607 TPE - 1
Sack Sparrow was mocked pretty high in a lot of the mock drafts that came out before the season. Getting involved right away and being a strong user (I think from other sim leagues as well?), Water was a lock to be a first rounder. Unfortunately, they’ve basically gone IA since last October, so Berlin ends up with a solid DL to plug in for a while, but don’t look like they’ve got a star, which you’d hope for at the fourth overall pick. If I was doing half steps, this’d be a 1.5 but when you have the 1.04, you need a better hit here.
1.05 LB Gaius Gleel - 606 TPE - 1
Oof, I remember now that Berlin was super rich in draft capital this go around. They’ve got a back to back IA at 600 TPE at 4 and 5. There really isn’t much to say here.
1.06 LB Ignatious Cleetington - 1034 TPE - 5
Cleetington! The next of my top users in S43. Radio is still earning, after a brief stint as a DSFL GM, he’s stepped down and is a rookie mentor, which may fit his speed more. I miss the SFNN podcast and chatting with him! He’s got that earning down, but his Discord activity has generally dropped. I assume he’s active in the Sarasota LR but we’ll never know.
Three-way Trade:
Colorado - Receives Pick 7 (from Yellowknife)
Chicago - Receives Pick 17 + 19 (from Colorado)
Yellowknife - Receives Pick 11(from Chicago) and Colorado S44 R2 (ended up being Pick 23)
Colorado - 2
When I saw this trade, I knew it was for the user honey, they were very obviously going to be a Yeti, they were an active, positive user who just fit their locker room culture. With Colorado not having a first rounder, I knew they had to get one, but the bundled three 2nds for a single player, didn’t love that then or now. You don’t need to overpay to get the player you want, if everyone knows they’re going to you.
Yellowknife - 5
Yellowknife got to drop to 11 from 7, and really it’s from 8->11 because one of those players you know is going to be honey. Loads of talent on the board, this is basically free and you pick up a middling second next season. This ended up being Zenzeroni Xystarch II so I’ll let the reader decide if this ended up being a positive for them.
Chicago - 3
Going from 11 -> 17 + 19 isn’t bad but especially in a top heavy draft like S43, I don’t love it. It also didn’t turn out super well in hindsight, but I really wouldn’t want to drop past 12 in this draft.
1.07 RB Swamp Maiden - 801 TPE - 3
Honey has had some stretches of “IA”-ish, updating basically once per season, but still earning at a low pace when she’s around. I really thought she’d be the COL RB of the season, and barring that, Woelkers on Hercules Henry would be the 1A, but that’s not to be. After a brief (I think 1 season?) stint as BBB GM, she’s got a low bank and hasn’t been to the forum in a month. At 800 TPE, still a great player, but you want those RBs to really earn.
1.08 RB Kyle Bessey - 499 TPE - 1
Another Berlin miss here, with their 3rd first rounder of the draft. Pokecraft was a surprise to me to go this high in the draft, I had them as maybe the 2nd RB in the draft (Swamp Maiden was a swap) and Berlin went up to get their guy. It really has been a disaster in this draft, having drafted a pair of 600 TPE players and a 500 TPE one with picks 4, 5, and 8.
1.09 S Spruce Willis - 1025 TPE - 5
I did not know FootbballIsCool before the draft and didn’t mock them super high, but a classic Sarasota win, taking an experienced vet who’s just crushed the ISFL and is doing well in the SHL as well. This pick is a just perfection. Love it.
1.10 LB Crasher Wake - 1079 TPE - 5
Ah, ZodiacEXE, our reigning DPotY and a winner of an Ultimus as well. I love Zodiac, he and Doubledub got me to join the PBE and I’m happy he’s doing so well here as well. Leading the pack of non-Opera Phantom creates in TPE, Zodiac should have gone top 5. I know if Austin had offered AZ the 5+8 for the 1, Zodiac would not have fallen past that.
1.11 LB Cheecago Boucher - 953 TPE - 5
Just a string of hits here! I thought Uber would go top 5 in a lot of mocks, great guy and proven earner. He’s maybe not at the max, but at 11th OA, you’re happy with that 950 TPE. A core Wraith piece, Uber is going to be a part of that competing core for a long time.
Trade:
New Orleans - Receives Pick 12
Baltimore - Receives Pick 15 and Pick 20
New Orleans - 4
I said before that I liked staying at 12 here, I think that’s where my top tier ended and NOLA went and got there. Pick 15 and 20 is a steep price to pay, but in this draft? Well worth it. Great trade, especially with Doubledub on the board.
Baltimore - 4
Baltimore knew that they were taking Anakin, and I think Tunkha Danstrol too, a product of dude_man scouting I think. Getting to take the players you wanted and basically for free is an easy swap.
1.12 LB Josh Gibson - 968 TPE - 5
Ah, the other half of the Amarillo Armadillo GM team! I don’t know why he dropped so low, I know that there were some slight concerns about him having time for ISFL + PBE but this Aussie has crushed it. Can’t speak well enough about him, thank you for helping me with my pitcher’s build in the minors!
1.13 LB Bubba Hog - 722 TPE - 4
It was kind of a running bit that I would never mock Bubba Hog in the first, but NOLA went up and got him!
1.14 LB Iman Outlaw - 626 TPE - 2
I remember everyone screaming bloody murder about a player forcing himself back to Arizona, but he’s something like 22/37 in total TPE. He earned well at the rookie stage, the easiest time to earn. ABJ isn’t IA, but he’s PBE focused and so we’ve got a medium earner at the end of the first. Hope for more here, maybe like 100 more TPE?
Round 2
2.01 - RB Anakin Skywalker - 988 TPE - 5
Anakin is back, and with a vengeance. Being left off the first rounder list, Anakin was poised to run the offense with his draft mates, Bertie Mannering-Phipps and Sam Mercury, but both of those players have left Baltimore and Anakin spearheads the rushing attack.
2.02 - WR Sem’ga Nah’sim - 991 TPE - GM
A GM pick, CC is a great user and earner. No notes.
2.03 - LB Norman Smiley - 765 TPE - 4
At this point in the draft, a 765 TPE player is great. After spending a pick on their GM, they get a player I really enjoyed talking to in Minny, Smiley went full speed and crushed it in the DSFL.
2.04 - S Tha Thu Cracite - 523 TPE - 3
I always mocked Deadly high because he was great in the Discord but I was told that he’d maybe not crush it with earning past the DSFL. He’s earned and at a spot in the secondary at Safety, he’ll be a good contributor for San Jose with his earning rate.
2.05 - RB Oskar Clark - N/A - 1
I really loved goblin jr. during the rookie season, they were a promising player, really active and friendly. I thought he’d crush it in the ISFL but he went IA very shortly after being drafted and his player is retired.
2.06 - OL Tunkha Danstrol - 542 TPE - 3
Grabbing a very serviceable OL player, albeit one that’s been IA since December here in the 2nd is great value. I think they knew the Baltimore staff well and so it was an easy pick for them.
2.07 - RB Bertie Mannering-Phipps - 857 TPE - 4
BMP was a great pick, was very active in the DSFL chat when we were rookies, winning an OPotY in the DSFL on Bondi Beach. BMP ended up leaving Baltimre alongside Sam Mercury a couple seasons ago and at a very healthy earning rate, and a growing bank account.
2.08 - S Robert Green - 996 TPE - 5
Another sim vet! I’m surprised RobJG2 made it all the way down to 22 overall, but he’s at the top of the leaderboard in TPE and makes the third Copperhead in the top 10 earners of this class.
2.09 - LB Allister Adebam - 1047 TPE - GM
Mobi takes himself with his GM pick! Great earning on a NOLA squad poised to compete.
2.10 - CB Bell Peepo - 662 TPE - GM (2)
Another GM pick, however Ephenssta wasn’t earning super well even as a rookie on a player his team would get to pick him with a second. I really don’t like the value of a GM not earning so lowly. I get that there’s burnout and stuff but you really hope a GM earns higher.
2.11 - QB Maximus Boudreaux - 1067 TPE - GM
Another GM, you guys may have recognized a pattern because we had a lot of GMs recreate in a weak S43 class. No notes, love Zoot, go WJC Team World!
2.12 - DE Giles Marret - 411 TPE - 2
I’m not sure what's a fair grade here, you can’t expect too much earning at this point in the draft, but we have a couple players who have done quite well after this point so a 2 for this spot.
2.13 - OL Kelijah Verwae - 681 TPE - 4
This is the pick I want with 2.12. Moosecop was the only OL player (before swaps) in the class, and it’s great to see them earning. They anchor the New Orleans offensive line, one of the reasons that they can afford to have so much TPE on the roster right now!
2.14 - CB Paul Dosza - 863 TPE - GM
And the last GM of the draft! Arizona bookends this draft review. I’d hope simo would have like 50 more TPE right now but that’s how it goes. He scammed me into GMing so this grade should probably be a 1!
I summed up and averaged each team’s grades throughout the draft, just to see how I think they did. I’ve got little notes for them too, for a quick hit look at what I think. I’ve kinda ranked them in draft grade order, but adjusted by number of moves made, ish.
4 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 19/20
There’s no question Austin crushed S43. They have 3 of the top 10 earners in the class, ending up with Opera Phantom, Zodiac, and RobJG2. Absolute killer class that has one Ultimus, and is poised for more.
4 + 5 + 5 = 14/15
Sarasota stays winning. Classic abh bringing in great users who earn and solidify themselves at the top of the NSFC. This is a cornerstone class for them.
4 + 5 + 4 + GM + 4 = 17/20 (13/15 in players)
In a top heavy and shallow S43 class, NOLA walked off turning their draft capital into a top draft. Great job from the team and a class that really shows its quality in these coming seasons.
5 + 5 + GM = 10/10 (5/5 in players)
Yellowknife makes a free trade to get a top earner and nab what will eventually turn into Zenzeroni Xystartch II. If you’re a Yellowknife fan, this really is a 10/10 draft, if you’re a patron at Zenzy’s Pizzaria, 0/10.
5 + 2 + GM = 7/10
Arizona ended up with two picks + a GM in Simo in the draft. They ended up with myself, who’s a GM so I’d give that a successful draft, and with such a forced hand in the draft, kind of ended up as they’d expect, after gambling on me.
4 + 5 + 3 + 4 = 14/20 (12/15 in players)
Baltimore ended up with a great, with easy trade value and taking players that they knew would be great earners for them. Marred by the fact that two of their great earners left but the draft itself went very well.
3 = 3
A solitary middle second round pick to their name, they pick up a safety that’ll be a good role player in San Jose.
3 + GM + 4 + 1 = 8/15 (5/10 in players)
I get Chicago making a trade into the second so that their GM pick isn’t wasted at a high pick, but giving away a valuable, top contributor is just not it.
2 + 3 + GM + 2 = 7/15 (5/10 in players)
Colorado entered this draft with not much capital and they swung for the user they wanted, which ended up so-so. I think if you factor in the GM pick not earning very well, the draft looks worse than a 5/10.
4 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 7/20 (3/15 in players)
Berlin started off fantastic, making a great trade down from the 2nd overall pick, and then missed on every single player in the first two rounds. They’re 0/3 on active players from S43 and it’s showing in their roster now.
0 = 0
The Crash did not show up for the draft, they were at the after party though.
0 = 0
The Hahalua and Crash were relaxing, no scouting necessary when you have no picks.
0 = 0
New York was hosting the after party that the Crash and Hahalua attended. I heard that their food spread was divine.
0 = 0
Man, let me tell you, the Otters know how to party. They brought drinks, a live DJ, and a killer vibe to the Silverback party.
(PS. this reads differently now that I'm finishing it up on not that Thursday)

Quote:I get that if the Outlaws wanted Sutha, they had to pick him right now, and I’m sure he’ll be a great player, I just don’t think it’s a great idea to use the #1 overall pick on a player who’ll be their #4 receiver this year, if he even gets a call-up. They have other positions that they need to address right now, and not two years from now when the people ahead of them regress. I’m sure it’ll work out, because everything works out for this fucking team. But I’m not a fan of it. (Grade: C-)
It’s true, I stayed in the DSFL for a couple more seasons, had a couple medium seasons as WR2 in Arizona and now am an LB.

3 = 3
0 = 0
The Crash did not show up for the draft, they were at the after party though.
0 = 0
The Hahalua and Crash were relaxing, no scouting necessary when you have no picks.
0 = 0
New York was hosting the after party that the Crash and Hahalua attended. I heard that their food spread was divine.
0 = 0
Man, let me tell you, the Otters know how to party. They brought drinks, a live DJ, and a killer vibe to the Silverback party.
