Troy Humuhumunukunuku?pua'a gets drafted to the Tijuana Luchadores
I can’t say that draft day could’ve gone any better. I was watching the coverage at a private party with close friends and family when I got the call from the Marshals telling me that I was going to San Antonio with the 4th overall pick. To see it then pop up on the television screen and hear the draft commentators talking about my potential and achievements almost felt too good to be true. This was such an incredibly deep draft class, especially at the running back position, that even in my highest hopes I hadn’t thought I would go off the board until at least round two or three. I put in a lot of work over this past summer during training camps and exercises to set myself apart from the pack, so having it all pay off in the biggest way possible was exhilarating. I knew that the Marshals were one of the teams looking to draft RB this year, but I’d only received communications from Palm Beach and never expected to be picked so high by a different team. Nevertheless, I’m not disappointed in the slightest, and am excited to join the San Antonio culture and chase an Ultimini.

Danny Grithead was very nervous on draft day oh yes he really was very nervous on draft day because he did not know where he would be going. In the DSFL Draft, Danny Grithead was a steal in the 5th round by the Kansas City Coyotes because all of the scouts doubted Grithead. They all looked down upon him because he did not have the size like the other players but he was far more gritty and also more tough and had lower pad level than other players so he overcame the odds to become the starter in Kansas City and be their star running back. In the NSFL, Grithead converted his position over to safety to be more of an asset to his team. The Orange County Otters have a rich history of success at safety, from Hall of Famer Ian Bavitz to current star Jaylon Broxton. The Otters' safety legends reached out to Grithead prior to the draft to give him some tips on how to play the position. So actually it was no surprise that with the number six pick of the NSFL Draft, the Orange County Otters selected Danny Grithead to be the next great Otters safety, to take up the mantle and try to win some more Ultimi for the great dynasty.
Code: Ready to be graded, 278 words I know a lot of people like to go all out for draft day--lots of people over, big party, all that stuff. But that's never been the kind of bear I am. Honestly, draft day for me was a pretty quiet affair. My parents came down from Anchorage to visit me in Lincoln, so my girlfriend came over and had dinner with us at my apartment. Afterwards, we all sat in the living room, turned on the TV, and just waited. Right around the start of the third round of the draft, my phone started buzzing. I picked it up, and the person on the other end of the line introduced himself as the GM of the San Antonio Marshals. I'll never forget, for as long as I live, the question that he asked me: "How would you like to be a Marshal?" He already knew the answer to that question, I'm sure, but I told him that I would be honored to be a part of the Marshals organization. We talked for a little longer--he told me that he really did not expect me to still be available in the third round, but he was thrilled that I was. After a few minutes, we said goodbye and I hung up the phone. While I was on the phone, my girlfriend and parents were as quiet as mice. But as soon as I got off the phone, they let out the biggest cheer. And when the pick was announced on TV a few minutes later, they did it again. All-in-all, it was absolutely a night to remember.

I was coming off a fantastic rookie season in the DSFL. We, the Tijuana Luchadores, had won the Ultimini Championship Game and at the awards ceremony, I won DSFL Wide Receiver of the Year. I definitely think ending my season on such a high put me firmly on the NSFL teams' radars.
I was contacted by several teams before draft day, but still didn't have a feel for when my name would be called. After weeks of interviews, it was finally draft day. I decided to attend the draft with my Mom and Dad, but I also had a watch party back home in Hamilton with all my friends and family. They really wanted to show me support and I was very grateful for that. As my family and I took our seats in the green room, they asked me when I thought I would hear my name called. I told them I really didn't know, but was hopeful that it would be somewhere in the first round. With about 5 minutes before the start of the draft, my phone rang. I stepped away from the table and answered the phone to the voice of the SaberCats general manager. We had a little small talk when he asked me if I wanted to move to San Jose. I was so excited I could barely control myself. I told him that it would be an honour to play for the SaberCats. We exchanged thank yous and I hung up and went back to my table. I tried to keep a straight face, but man it was tough. The draft officially began and the SaberCats walked up to the podium to announce the first overall pick. I'll remember these words forever. "With the first overall pick in the Season 9 NSFL Entry Draft, the San Jose SaberCats are proud to select wide receiver Xavier Flash." My parents jumped out of their seats and we embraced. All that hard work that we put it had payed off. They showed a lve stream of the watch party back home and they were going nuts as well. I walked up the stage, put on my SaberCats hat, and was officially a member of the NSFL and the San Jose SaberCats. That was one of the best days of my life and I'll never forget it. (390 words)
You have no idea how much stress is put upon you when your sitting in the back room, waiting for your name to be called, but being passed over by different people again and again and again. I had a highly publicized break down the night of the draft. A break down I'm not proud of. But I will still say that I was justified. I put in so much hard work and for a good while, it looked like all my hard work was going to be for naught as so many other players went before me. Players who are so much worse than me. But despite what you may think, I am not egotistical. I think that the drafting of Ben Bortboy and Forrest Gump ahead of me was justified, and I think I am lucky for being drafted ahead of the handsome Gimmy Jarrapalo. But for everyone else, they were all reached for. I will prove to the world that I should have been taken number 1 overall. I was the best player in this draft. Everyone will realize that. I will prove to the fool GMs that they should have traded up for me. They will all come crawling to me in FA but I will kick them away and spit on them, the way they kicked at me and spat at me on draft night
Draft day was huge for Xerxes Ridley. He and his mother anxiously watched from her apartment in downtown San Francisco, uncertain if Ridley's loud mouth would impress or irritate the DSFL management. After being scouted by a couple teams prior to the draft, Ridley was unsure if he left a good impression and if he ended up a high priority pick for anyone. After being passed over in the first three rounds, Ridley was growing quite nervous. The teams that talked to Ridley hadn't drafted him and he assumed that the interviews must've gone poorly or that he must've underperformed during the scouting sessions. However, with the 21st pick, Ridley was selected for the Pythons, which was a well-established team that he had hoped to play for this year. In addition, the announcers of the DSFL draft acknowledged the value Ridley brought to the team and explicitly stated their surprise that he fell so low. While Ridley was still upset at his draft position, this did ease the pain just enough for him to be excited to finally enter the DSFL. He was one step closer to accomplishing his and his father's shared dream of being an official NSFL player. With what he viewed as an embarrassing draft position, Ridley was also able to fuel his training the next morning in order to start his redemption in the NSFL draft. Ridley assured himself and the media that he would not fall that far when he finally got drafted up to an NSFL team and all of his anxiety and disappointment was repurposed into drive and ambition. And of course, his mom was just beaming with pride that his son got drafted at all. Unlike Ridley's harsh judgement of himself, she viewed the 21st position as a huge accomplishment and something that he achieved through years of hard work.

Lucas Knight remembers his draft day as being exciting yet a bit disappointing. “I had decided to spend draft day in my apartment, I really needed some quiet time to calm down and wait for my name to be off the board. Before it started, I phoned my parents to remind them of the event and they were very happy to stay up until I got drafted; they told me a couple of times how much they were proud of my effort and that they were going to support me no matter what team chose me.
Since the S15 draft class was one of the biggest in recent times, I thought I would have to wait to round 4 or 5 to be drafted since there were quite a number of interesting defensive back prospects. When it didn't happen, I just became a little bit desperate, until I was selected by Norfolk at round 8, being the third cornerback drafted. That was surprising, since I was expecting to go to the Solar Bears or the Pythons, because they were the only teams that talked to me during the Prospect Bowl week. Obviously I was disappointed that I had to wait that much time to hear my name, but I took it as motivation and swore to give it all with the SeaWolves so that everyone sees what they lost when I was overlooked. That was what I told the GM when I got the call, as well as how exciting it was to play for Norfolk. After the draft finished, I went with some of my college ex teammates to celebrate big time; after all, it was one of the happiest days of my life and I couldn't wait to meet my new team and start my DSFL career.” Code: 299 words |
