For those of you who have been at the edge of your seat watching Booter McGavin chase the ISFL record for most career punt yards, it is time to admit the truth and wave the white flag. Booter McGavin is having a historically poor season punting the ball and he has absolutely no chance of catching King's record. In fact his season has been so poor there may even be questions raised regarding his ability to keep his average punt record if he continues on at this pace. Even if Booter wasn't having such a poor season, San Jose has already drafted his replacement (who is putting up stellar numbers in the DSFL I might add) signaling this is likely the end of the road for the legendary punter.
Booter's struggles this season have not been a mystery. It is clear he still has that powerful leg that has made him a fan favorite for years. He even set his career long (and second longest in ISFL history) with an 83 yard punt earlier this season. Where Booter struggles is with his punt accuracy. Many punts have sadly bounced off the side of his foot for only 30 yards, or even more concerning are clean hit balls that end up sailing out of bounds well before due to accuracy miscalculations. These issues aren't just impacting his punting average but also the Sabercats winning percentage. Booter's short punts have but the Sabercats defense in terrible positions all year, and the shanks have let returns have massive take backs against the special teams unit. Overall Booter has just been detrimental to winning football games.
We caught up with Booter to see if he could explain the struggles he is facing this season and if he still has a chance at the punting yard record. "Look nothing is wrong with my punts this year. Sure some haven't been my top quality work but did you see that 83 yard boom? That was vintage Booter and shows that I still got it. As for this record I won't give out hope until my last game. I always have it in me to put out big punts so no record should be safe when I am around."
Well it seems Booter still has his trademarked confidence in his ability to punt the ball. And perhaps he should still have some of this confidence. As bad as his punting has been his field goal kicking has been solid this year especially from long distance. Booter has been perfect on field goals over 40 yards and has a league 9 makes over the 40 yard distance. The most impressive was his 59 yarder to send the game into overtime against Baltimore. "Yeah that field goal was just perfect. Most people feel pressure but I really don't. I knew I could step up, hit that ball and boom it right through the goal posts. It's a shame my team couldn't come together and win that game after I was so damn good."
So there you have it, Booter's ability may be starting to dwindle but his personality and confidence refuses to wane. It will be interesting to see if he can pull himself together and post a respectable stat line by the time the San Jose Sabercats season comes to a close.
