Chef Roundstone smacks Zenzeroni awake with his spoon that he always carries “How many of you have been a waiter or waitress before being accepted into Spaghetti School?” Zenzeroni groggily wakes up as the majority of hands go up. “Good because for most of you that will remain your top position no matter what you do. Even if you are a top chef you are likely to wait on top customers yourself so it is important to understand the basics of how to be a waiter/waitress. Is that understood?” A cacophony of “Yes chef” echoes throughout the classroom/kitchen. “Good. Now that Zenzeroni has joined us for class how about you go ahead and show us the proper way to wait on a customer?”
“Yes chef,” Zenzeroni mumbles nearly falling out of his chair. Zenzeroni walks over to the kitchen to get a tray to put food on.
“WRONG. What food are you going to give a customer that hasn’t ordered anything yet?”
“I uh–”
“Go on over to Melinda and George and try again.”
Zenzeroni scurries over to two of his fellow students “Hello. What would you like to drink today?”
Chef Roundstone cracks his wooden spoon against a desk “Dammit Zenzeroni do you have no decency?! Sit down before you make any more of a fool out of yourself!” Chef Roundstone is in hysterics pacing around the room at this point but Zenzeroni couldn’t be bothered to care anymore. It had already been a week of getting picked on by the chef and he was sick of it. Culinary Placement and Training was by far his least favorite class and the Chef was doing him no favors.
The class continued on as Chef Roundstone taught the basics of how to properly and elegantly serve food and interact with customers but Zenzeroni had lost interest again and was thinking about the football tryouts that had happened three days earlier. He didn’t know why but he felt a sense of excitement doing those various “drills” if that’s even what you call them. That being said, his interest in the culinary arts continued to wane and Chef Roundstone was certainly not helping change his mind.
The kitchen bell started to ding which meant class was over “And remember the customer is always right. Alright, have a good day see you Wednesday!” Zenzeroni drags himself away from his table and out the door getting ready to head to “The Art of Kitchen Ballet”.
Two kids rush by in mid-conversation “Bro did you see? The roster is out for the football team!”
“No way dude! Did you make it?!”
“I don’t know yet I’m heading there now.”
Zenzeroni’s interest piques and he joins the crowd of students rushing down the halls and into the cafeteria where a mass of students has formed in front of one of the walls. Students shove past Zenzeroni trying to get a view of the papers on the wall as Zenzeroni attempts to do the same. His slim figure helps and he eventually reaches the front of the crowd. In front of him, he sees a list of names. There are no positions next to the names there is just a list of those who made the team.
“WHAT?! MAN THIS SHIT IS RIGGED!” A student to the left of Zenzeroni storms off clearly not having made the team. Zenzeroni doesn’t expect to be on the team so he looks for Linguine Zamboni’s name instead hoping to let him know that he made the team so that they can celebrate. However, looking through the names he sees that it is in alphabetical order by last name and immediately goes to the last paper to look for Zamboni but right above the last names beginning with Z is one last name with an X Xystarch II. And looking to the right he sees the first name: Zenzeroni. He had somehow made the team and his roommate hadn’t. In shock, Zenzeroni pushes his way out of the crowd finding it harder and harder to breathe.
Finally, Zenzeroni makes it out of the crowd still gasping for air, and runs straight into a familiar face “Starchy tell me the good news! We both made the team right?!” Linguine asks.
“I— you— we— You didn’t— I–” Zenzeroni can’t catch his breath and looks up to see Linguine’s disappointed face as he realizes what Zenzeroni is saying and that is the last thing Zenzeroni sees before everything fades to black around him.
Zenzeroni rubs his eyes as he comes to and sees he’s back in the school hospital. The room is empty except for the various medical devices of which none of them are being used on him. Zenzeroni gets up into a sitting motion as Doctor Fettucini Mozarella barges in “There he is! Rise and shine buttercup! How’s ol’ Starchy doing today?”
“What happened?”
“I saw that you made the football team! Exciting news! I’m sure you are going to make a real big impact out there. You know with our legendary coaching staff led by Chef Threemen I wouldn’t be surprised to see us win the championship in our first year. I can’t believe we haven’t had a football team this entire time! Back in my day, I was the star quarterback for the Baltimore Bugs” Doctor Mozarella says avoiding the question.
“Wait Baltimore?”
“Anyway, what were you saying?” Doctor Mozarella quickly tries to change the subject
“Yeah, umm, this is the second time in two weeks this has happened to me. What’s wrong with me? And to be honest with you, I don’t think I should be on the football team if this keeps happening.”
“So get this” Doctor Mozarella says still ignoring his question “I was sitting outside the other day minding my business when out of nowhere a butterfly landed on my knee. Can you believe that? I think that’s a good omen for me!”
“Yeah. Maybe. I don’t know. Doctor what is wrong with me?!”
“Nothing’s wrong with you. It’s just a minor little problem that will sort itself out on its own I’m sure. Sleep it off in your own bed tonight and you will be good as new tomorrow!”
“I thought that last time but it happened again.”
“Well as the saying goes, lightning doesn’t strike the same place three times!”
“Do they say that?”
